Friends of Letheringsett Mill

A.G.M. & River Glaven Walk

29th June 2008

The first annual general meeting of the Friends of Letheringsett was held on Sunday 29th June 2008 at Letheringsett watermill.

The Chairman's Report

The chairman reported that it had been a successful first year for the Friends of Letheringsett Mill after forming on the 19th March 2007. The aims were to assist with the educational side of the mill’s activities by fundraising by events etc. and by applying for available grants. Achievements over the past year included the building of the website, the recruitment of members, with HRH Prince Charles and Norman Lamb MP as honorary members and several successful fundraising and social events. Links with other local mill and community groups are being built. Looking to the future, the Chairman hoped the group would continue to expand, recruiting more new members and exceed this years fund raising, building on the experiences of the previous year. He finished, by thanking all the committee and especially the Treasurer and the Secretary for their hard work during the preceding year.

The River Glaven Walk

The meeting was followed by a guided walk along the River Glaven led by Ian Sheppard from the River Glaven Conservation group. He told us many interesting facts about the river Glaven and it's management, demonstrating the water quality by showing us the variety of plant life and fish species and explained the concerns about the aggressive and invasive signal crayfish of which two or three have been found in Letheringsett ford, just above the mill. This has potentially serious consequences for the smaller native white-clawed crayfish.
